The Author's Preface:

The writing of this book took place in Bruegger's Bagel shop in downtown Boston where I used to work. To me, this place has been a home away from home.  I enjoyed writing here better than at home.  I wrote at a small table by the window.  I told the managers, Mashilmond and Billy, that this is where I started to write my book.  Mashil and Billy are very nice people.  We had worked together very well.  Mashil said, 'This table will be yours whenever you come in.  You are part of the family.'  And so I continued to come.  When they were very busy, I cleaned the tables for them.  The employees liked that and they give me free coffee.

I started to write this book two years ago.  It has been a rollercoaster ride up and down, stirring up 73 years of memories that were all buried.  Some were good.  Some were bad.  I want my children and grandchildren to know where and what I came from; what I’ve been, and who I am.  I want them to realize how lucky they are for having been born in America, and to have the freedom to choose whatever they want in life - particularly my grand- daughters.  Having been born a female in the 1930s, and in a faraway land to boot, I can appreciate just how different it is...and my heart is flled with joy watching these girls grow up into proud, confdent, well rounded young ladies.  I am grateful to be alive to enjoy it.
